I can remember once talking to an NLP practitioner who told me that he couldn’t understand why people pay good money to go to the cinema to see a horror film when they can watch the horror film that is going on in their head without paying anything.
That really struck a chord with me and made me smile because it is so true. So many people let their imagination get completely carried away and they picture all sorts of horrible things happening to them which can be far worse than any horror film.
It could be that someone is struggling financially at the moment, like so many people are at the moment, and they start to worry about if they will be able to pay their mortgage or not. Before long they are watching a horror film in their head, they are sleeping on a park bench, begging for money so that they can eat, their family have disowned them and life is just not worth living.
You may be smiling to yourself whilst you are reading this but I am sure you have also experienced intense images in your mind of what could happen if everything went wrong. The problem is, your subconscious mind just doesn’t know the difference between fact and fiction so it would be safe to say that when you are imagining these horrific scenarios your body will be tensing up and you will be feeling anxious and frightened.
Now that you can see how vivid your imagination can be, don’t you think that it would be a good idea to imagine what will happen when everything goes really well. Imagine yourself living in the home of your dreams with your ideal partner, imagine how you will feel when you wake up in the morning and are excited about what the day holds for you.
Where as before when you were feeling anxious and scared, you will now be feeling optimistic and full of enthusiasm and when you are feeling this way it is literally a case that anything is possible, and I know which way I would rather feel, don’t you?
So, next time you find that your imagination is running away with you in a negative way, stop, and be aware of what is happening, change the film that is showing in your mind to a more positive one and you will soon notice the difference in your everyday life.
